The workplace is a place where you will spend most of your time in your life. That is why you have to love it, adapt and make the most of it. What about if you use the workplace as your form of expression, but not in a rightful way? South Africa is indeed celebrating it's 18 years of freedom on 27 April of this year. This shows that the country has come a long way to fight for the citizen's rights.
Is your workplace a platform to communicate, just because you can?
What I have found fascinating however is the people using their freedom to such an extent that will hurt others. Mo Flava a DJ in Y FM, the Youth FM made comments about well-known actress Maggie Benedict who plays Akhona Griffiths in the famous South African soapie Generations
read more. Mo Flava used the platform of being a DJ to describe Maggie as "ugly". The manager of Y FM commented that " They merely implied that she has a resemblance to UK popstar Estelle. Then why didn't he say so?

How can a DJ say such a thing as this was a complaint by a listener claiming that Mo Flava and his colleagues are referring to Maggie as an ugly-looking person. Does our freedom of expression lead us to such behaviour. There are obviously effects and implications because Mo Flava has not only created a bad name for himself but for his company too. The radio station's reputation is at stake now. The company has to find a way of handling the situation, but the question still lies, how will Y FM handle this and does having a right whether in the workplace or as a citizen make you label others? YFM has to look at how it will communicate with the actress to establish or maitain a good relationship.
Maggie is talented and knows her business very well. It makes me sick to realise that there are still people who struggle to accept others because of how they look. People are sick, and DJ MoFlava was out of line to say something against an actress like Maggie, does he even know the ethics of radio, that you don't say something that could tarnish the image of the other? Is he stupid or what? I am utterly disgusted by people who are too condescended
ReplyDeleteI have to say I agree with you Loyiso, DJ MoFlava took this this matter lightly, he thought he was joking around but it had an impact, even if he knew the ethics, it does not look like he cares. Such people reflect the intertainment industry in a bad way.
DeleteMo flava should be ashamed of what he said, the media is really giving people a platform to say everything but people turn to abuse it by saying anything which is totally wrong. I guess that is notorious!
ReplyDeleteYes, people tend to absuse their platforms or opportunities.
DeleteMaggie is not ugly! Mo flava should be fired just like Kulie Roberts was fired on Sunday World. It doesnt give anybody the right to discriminate another person, he is not God.
ReplyDeleteMoFlava is taking advantage of being a DJ, I don't think he will be fired, the right measures have to be followed.
DeleteIf he is fired, that is.
DeleteMaggie is a great actress and her looks should not get in the way of her talent. What Mo Flava did was extremely wrong and he was being unprofessional. Who said he's not ugly? He had no right to shoot off his mouth on national radio saying that Maggie Benedict is ugly. He should be expelled if not fired!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, he judged Maggie based on her looks not her job, he still doesn't have the right.
Deletethis is what celbrities do to ruin the image and career by saying bad things about others if you were the manager or public relation practitioner of YFm what will you have done to deal with this situation because MoFlava just ruin his image and the company's image
ReplyDeleteI would have had MoFlava to apologise to Maggie on behalf of himself and the Y FM. I would also do a media release or press conference withheld. Anything to regain our image as this is the deed of an individual.
DeleteI think that the problem we South Africans do not understand what freedom of speech and MoFlava doesnot have the right to lable other people.
ReplyDeleteAmean out of all people they just decided to pick Maggie, dnt they believe in that "beauty liars in the eyes of the beholder'.This organisation and its workers have to apologies to Maggie for this poor act.
ReplyDeleteMy point exactly, an apology is needed before the situation gets out of hand in a greater way.
DeleteYfm Dj's are famous for making nasty comments, they need to really think hard sometimes before they air their views...I mean who cares what they really think sometimes.Benedict is a talented woman and that is all that matters.
ReplyDeleteThis suggests that Y FM DJ's need training before being hired, I mean they should act professional not immatured.
Deletehaa... this dj must just be re- engineered (fired)... hes being in the media industry for a long time and by now he should know what is to be said to the listerners and what must not go on air...
ReplyDeleteYou know Pebetse, you would think that someone who has experience won't do such a thing, it is in fact new employees who are careful of what they do within the workplace.
DeleteAs much as we have freedom of speech in South Africa, Mo Flava took it a bit too far by publicly humiliating Maggie like that, I think Mo Flava owes Maggie a public apology. Maggie has great talent and she is good at what she does, Mo Flavas cooments were totally uncallled for.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Mo flava is just expressing exactly how he feels and well everyone has the right to express how they feel. I do however find what he says is insulting and used to hurt Maggie. how will Y FM handle this? a public apology would be a great start. Does having a right whether in the workplace or as a citizen make you label others? one way or another there will be labelling it is part of freedom of expression
