Unity in diversity

The Heritage month: South Africa embraces it's diversity.
souce: (www.sahistory.org.za)

The Heritage month is celebrated in September every year in South Africa. This marks the day of having different cultures in our country and where we come from as a nation. Heritage day is however on September 24.
In every workplace, there people who have different backgrounds, different beliefs, different cultures and so on. Every person wants to embrace their culture by speaking their own language if possible or wearing their cultural clothing.

Organisations like the University of Johannesburg have an Annual International Festival which is the biggest event hosted by the Division for Internalisation. The event embraces the different cultures, or lifestyles within South Africa but especially for international students or stakeholders read more. Lotus FM will be also celebrating its heritage month at Ukhahlamba Drakensburg Park World Heritage site. This will be done to encourage South Africans to come together to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and unite against rhino poaching read more.
It is a very good thing to see companies or organisations celebrate the diversity in our country. The only question posed will be whether they are doing it for the right reasons or just to gain publicity. Employers know that if they make their employees feel welcomed and accepted, they will surely gain their trust and the relationship will always be there. It seems that these days every holiday needs an event but is it an ethical one, that is done to meet the goals and objectives? Or is it done all for the sake of having a good image in the public eye?

  1. When I saw students from different countries at the University of Johannesburg celebrating their cultures made me realise how people take their cultures serious and how much the world want to be united. Yesterday I saw something that I have never seen in my life and I was so inspired to get involved in my culture and know it in-depth.

    1. It is a good thing to see such events occuring, where diversity brings us together. That is why I pose the question of the main purpose of the event and hope hope that it is for celebrating our cultures.

  2. Heritage day makes us to remember where we are from because in today's world many people adapted western culture and they are no longer living thier cultures, so it is important for us to celebrate heritage day in order to know who we are and where we are from.

    1. I agree... And what better way to celebrate it than in the workplace? Which is why I think some companies use their public relations so well to gain publicity.

  5. i dont think its really relavent question to ask if companies who celebrate heritage day do it for the right reasons or not. its a good thing if companies choose to celebrate heritage day and those who do not its their baby to nurse, after all its not a force.

    1. I know it is not by force but for every event there is a reason behind it. I am not saying all companies do it for publicity I am asking they question whether they are or not.

  7. public holidays like herritage day, mandea dayetc. are a good moment for companies to grab an opportunty to publish their company in a good way,i mean if they do so we are going to regard them as a non ignorant company, and it is for their own good to adapt or perish

    1. My point exactly, public holidays are never the same anymore. Companies do not want to be seen as ignorant.

    1. Indeed Grace. A positive thing about such events is that people gain knowledge and get to learn a lot about other cultures.

  10. Why do we recall our culture only on the 24th of September, this should be a everyday practice.

    1. It does seem forgetten when we do it once, but would it be appropriate to be always wearing cultural clothing? I think it should not be celebrated once but making it a once in a while event makes it special.

  11. in reality heritage day should be celebrated everday.. why only celebrate our differences and cultures on one day? this shows us how dis-interested in each others cultures most south africans are..

    1. We could do that but I do not think it would make it so special, maybe once a month because there are a whole lot of things to also embrace.

  12. I was attending the heritage day event at the University of Johannesburg and I think that the event was not done to gain publicity but it was done to embrace different Africa cultures.

    1. I certainly hope so because I was there too. It would be a disappointment if it was done for just to gain publicity.

  14. Im curious about this whole change of heritage day, people are now shifting the focus from culture to 'braai day'. Heritage da is a reminder of our country's diversity,it should not be changed to braai day.

    1. Well... Some people see it as a way of celebrating or going out and having braais. I think that it should be the responsibility of an organisation hosting the Heritage Day event, to emphasise the importance of the day so that people won't miss the concept or mistake it for 'just another public holiday'.
